Si narra la vicenda di Charles Foster Kane, magnate dell’editoria. Il film inizia con un flash-back. Kane è morto, si cerca di interpretare la sua incredibile personalità, le sue speranze e le sue azioni. L’uomo è morto pronunciando la parola “Rosebud”. Un giornalista si assume l’incarico di venire a capo del mistero andando a parlare con le persone che furono più vicine al magnate. Comincia dal suo più grande amico, Leland, che sostenne Kane fin dall’inizio, quando il grand’uomo sembrava animato da irresistibile spinta di onestà e fu da questi licenziato quando non si schierò dalla sua parte in una vicenda di scarsa importanza.

A group of reporters are trying to decipher the last word ever spoken by Charles Foster Kane, the millionaire newspaper tycoon: “Rosebud.” The film begins with a news reel detailing Kane’s life for the masses, and then from there, viewers are shown flashbacks from Kane’s life. As the reporters investigate further, the viewers see a display of a fascinating man’s rise to fame, and how he eventually fell off the top of the world.
